Many argue that today’s music sounds a bit too clean and overproduced. It’s obvious that digital instruments have advanced tremendously, surpassing the capabilities of the tools from the analog era, but taking away some of that warmth that was actually created by analog devices’ imperfections. This is why many developers design instruments and plugins with the specific purpose of emulating analog sounds.
In rare cases, the emulations manage to expand the capabilities of the analog design while staying true to the original sound. This may very well be the case for Antresol, a plugin labeled as an “analog BBD stereo flanger”.
An analog effect with a smooth design
D16 Audio Group Software are known for their excellent effect plugins and instruments that often emulate the analog sounds of old. Antresol is no exception; though it’s presented as an emulation of a BBD based analog delay line, it can do so much more than delay (or flanger, for that matter).
The bucket-brigade device (or BBD for short) is a small chip that was used to create the first analog delay units, at the end of the 1960s. Before that, all musicians had were tape delays, which weren’t that easy to transport due to their fragility. But the size of the BBD chip meant that delay could now be achieved through more compact units. Antresol’s photorealistic design tries to imitate that of those classic units, but also offers you plenty of other features.
More versatile than you’d expect
I’ve already mentioned delay and flanger, but it seems that Antresol can also be a chorus, bit crusher, vibrato, or distortion unit. You can start by browsing its presets (which are neatly grouped into the aforementioned categories) or try to create your own effect.
The interface is quite easy to navigate. You have parameters like offset, rate, and depth for both the left and right channels, which can be linked or used differently for a more creative stereo sound design. A lot of the plugin’s power also comes for the LFO which can be used in three modes: Mistress, Linear, and Concave. While a lot more can be said by this apparently simple plugin, I’m going to stop here and just recommend it to any producer who is trying to add warm and subtle analog effects into+ their mix.

The plugin’s presets are extremely well made. While some of them sound a bit too clean, there are some that show off a good mix of analog and modern sounds. For example, “Number 19” is a standard-sounding preset that can be used in most scenarios. However, I would use “Number 10” to make a more futuristic-sounding track.

Antresol’s Presets

As you would expect from a plugin like this, the preset are well built. The differences between presets are subtle, but some preset even sound a bit more analog than others. It’s also

I also agree. One thing I have not heard in any of the plugins I have tried to emulate the warmth of analog delays is a flanger.

What’s New In Antresol?

You may know it from classic musical instruments or from your TV, but the bucket-brigade device is not only a precursor of flanging and flanging-n-flanging. It can do more than just that. Antresol has 6 effect types:Delay,
Chorus,
Vibrato,
BitCrusher,
Distortion, and
Scratch.
While the delay effect provides you with an analog emulation of a bucket-brigade device, it is in no way a simple delay. The plugin supports a variety of useful features like tempo-sync, easy routing and MIDI-export. While it is not 100% authentic, it feels like an extension of the classic bucket-brigade devices.
The actual delay is highly controllable, and it can be set to sync or not to sync with the host. The effect itself can be run in loop, while the BPM determines the delay time. Furthermore, the right/left channel can be used independently and their delay times can be linked together. This makes it easy to add a delay to any instruments, from strings to synths to percussion, as well as giving you the option to use different delay times for each part of your song. The
Chorus effect can be used to add a chorus or flanger to your mix. Just like the delay effect, this plugin also supports sync or no sync and loop, while the effect itself can be turned into a loop. It can also be modulated by the LFO, and it supports filters, delay time, and various other controls. The LFO controls can be used for more than just the volume of the effect, as well as the delay time. For instance, the vibrato effect can be set to use a multi-waveform LFO, or a simple LFO, which will be able to be modulated by the LFO. With the bitcrusher effect, the LFO can control the crunching rate, while using a sync function will make the effect sync with the host. The bitcrusher also supports varying delay times for the left and right channels. This way, you can create a bitcrusher without affecting the delay times. The LFO can be used for either the crunch rate or the delay times for each channel. The distortion effect can be set to use an LFO or a simple clock, and it has controls for delay time and gain. The LFO can be used for either the distortion or the delay times. As such, it can be used to create the classic tremolo effect. The
Vibrato effect can be used to add tremolo to any instrument. As such, it can be used to add tremolo to a guitar or a synth. The effect has controls for delay time, number of waves, and LFO. The LFO can be used to control the amount of tremolo or the speed of the effect. The delay time
